Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." Matthew 5:5
As we continue in our study on the beatitudes, let us keep in mind that each of the verses that make up the beatitudes is part of a unit, a whole. Even with this said, we need to deal with each part of this unit in order to thoughtfully reflect and understand Jesus "Pocket Guide to Kingdom Living."
In verse five we read, blessed are the meek. When someone is referred to as meek, in modern context, it often paints a picture of someone who is easily imposed on, someone who is overtly humble. In our culture, which is often infatuated with self-assertion and power, this can be seen as a weakness. But, the idea of meekness, especially in Jesus beatitudes is completely different.
In Matthew 5:5, Jesus is drawing from Psalm 37:11 but the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace. (The meek are further described in Psalms 37:7-9 as those who wait for the Lord.) This word meek speaks of those who are disadvantaged and powerless, but also of those whose stance is not arrogant. One who is meek understands that they cannot save themselves from their situation. Thus, their dependence is on, or in, someone else. This thought almost directly echoes the thought in Matthew 5:3.
The follower of Jesus does not insist on his own rights, but displays a humility and meekness that is genuine. In the beatitudes, meekness is quite compatible with great strength and ability, accompanied by a genuine dependence on God. In the end it is the meek, and not the self-accretive who will possess the earth.
The inheritance of the earth most likely refers to the age to come. Its funny if you think about it. Most of the people around us toil away for things of temporal value. They work, and sometimes cheat, in order to gain a false sense of ownership, control, and possession. But, in the end, the only thing that will matter is your position before God, not the position you held over men. It is the meek, those who gain strength from their dependence on God, who will inherit everlasting riches. Therefore, make it your habit to wait on God, not to force things your way, but depend on Him to guide your steps. In total dependence you will find absolute peace.
Do you draw your strength from the Almighty, or do you try and render your life situations in order to gain a false sense of power over your existence? If you attempt the latter, you will not have peace. If you do not have peace in your life, maybe it's time you step back and consider your dependence on God, or if you are depending on Him at all.
